    Khiuaz Dospanova (1922-2008) -
    Soviet pilot of the Great Patriotic War, navigator-shooter. People's Hero of Kazakhstan (2004).
    She went down in history as the first female Kazakh pilot.
    On October 26, 1941, Khiuaz Dospanova was enlisted as a navigator-gunner in the 588th night bomber aviation regiment. She performed combat missions on the Southern Front, North Caucasus, Transcaucasia, Ukraine and Belarus. Twice the brave pilot was seriously wounded, but she returned to service and met Victory near Berlin.
    Khiuaz Dospanova returned from the war disabled, with fused fractures of both legs, but, despite this, she actively participated in public life. She got married and raised a son.
