    Description

A very rare chichicastenango Cofradia members jacket.
This fine men's cofradía jacket is hand woven by men using hand spun, undyed black wool. Men also do the tailoring and embroidery decoration. The flowers are hand embroidered in several colors of silk. The hand knotted fringe and the embroidered swirls are silk in magenta and maroon. According to Carmen Petersen (Maya of Guatemala, p. 93), the blue zigzag around the cuff and shoulders indicate that the wearer was an astrologist or day-keeper of the ceremonial Maya calendar. Authentic Chichicastenango men's cofradía jackets in good condition are rare. One of the largest I’ve seen. Measures approximate 22.5” across chest and 22” in length excluding fringe. Overall excellent condition, needs an easy repair on right armpit and shoulder.
