    Description

Beautiful Hand made table runner. Handmade by a church member in CHICHICASTENANGO, QUICHE, GUATEMALA, CA. Label with the creators name on back. (see picture #3)
I purchased this at a United Methodist Mission Rally in early 1990s from a group who were selling handmade items from many countries. All the money was given to the creators of the pieces. This was part of my collection of pieces from different foreign missions.
Following the independence of Latin American countries from Spanish rule, indigenous textile arts experienced a re-birth, blending modern and traditional aspects of the craft. Within various regions, highly specific techniques, colors and patterns evolved within the scope of costume, making individual articles of clothing the very definition of place. Time marches on, however, and these distinctions are becoming blurred, sometimes vanishing altogether. As a result, fine examples of indigenous folk art textiles are a story unto themselves.
