Mayan mask corresponding to the period posclásico, found in Pleasures, Campeche as exposed in the National Museum of Anthropology and History of Mexico. The Mayan civilization inhabited a great partof the region named "Mesoamérica" in the current territories of Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador; and include five states of the south-east of Mexico Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana, Tabasco and Yucatan.
During this long time, in this territory there were spoken dozens of dialects that gave place to 44 Mayan Languages.
Contrary to a very widespread belief, the Mayan civilization "never "disappeared". At least, not completely, their descendants still live in the region and many of them speak someone of the Languages mayenses. The Mayan literature illustrates the life of this culture.
