    The 76
    th
Airborne Division is the oldest of all Russian airborne units, formed under a different name in 1939. It acquired its honorific status of Guards unit during WW2, following its performance in the battle of Stalingrad. The division is currently stationed in the Russian city of Pskov and therefore frequently referred to as the “Pskovskaya” division. It took very active part in the Soviet war in Afghanistan, both Chechen wars and more recently, in the annexation of Crimea. It is now reportedly involved in the conflict in eastern Ukraine (some of its servicemen were apparently killed in the recent fighting there).
