Description:
Blue Green Algae
contain Aphanizomenon flos-aquae harvested from Upper Klamath Lake in southern Oregon. Harvesting is done during the summertime, June to November. The algae is filtered to preserve the most vibrant blooms and then further purified by centrifugation. Then chilled and sold dried as a powder.
Blue Green Algae is 70% vegetable protein and has higher levels of beta-carotene than broccoli. The one-two punch potency of blue-green algae is that it contains a high concentration of nutrients- over 65 vitamins, minerals and enzymes and the complete spectrum of eight essential amino acids and ten nonessential amino acids… and they are all easily absorbed by the body. In fact up to 97% of the beneficial vitamins, minerals and enzymes found in blue-green algae are easily absorbed (some supplements are as low as 5-25% absorbable). AFA also contains the most biologically active chlorophyll of any known food.
In adults, stem cells have the function of repairing damaged cells. Unfortunately, as we age, stem cells have a reduced restorative ability and are more vulnerable to oxidative stress. This results in the body being less able to repair itself. Based on previous studies that showed blue-green algae can modulate immune function in animals, the Department of Neurosurgery at USF investigated the effects of AFA on cultured human stem cells. Researchers noted that preliminary results suggested an ethanol extract of AFA may promote human stem cell proliferation. The blue green algae spirulina is a good source of protein, with about 6 grams in each 100-gram serving. Its protein content includes all the essential amino acids, making it a complete source of these important nutrients. A 100-gram serving also contains about 2 grams of carbohydrates and almost no fat. With only 26 calories in each serving, spirulina is a naturally low-calorie food. It also provides modest amounts of several important minerals, including calcium, iron, potassium and magnesium, as well as small amounts of zinc and phosphorus. The algae also contain vitamins A, C, E and several of the B vitamins, including thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B-6 and folate..
So you’ve been told to “eat your greens,” right? But what about your algae?
Yes, it may seem a strange thought, the consumption of prokaryotic microorganisms, but blue-green algae, in organic form, is a wonderful nutrient-rich food. When we talk about blue-green algae, we are referring to a large and diverse group of simple, plant-like organisms found in tropical or subtropical waters that have a high-salt content and some large fresh water lakes. The natural color of these algae can give bodies of water a dark-green appearance and the the altitude, temperature, and sun exposure dramatically influence the types and variety growing in the water.KLAMATH BLUE GREEN ALGAE from Upper Klamath Lake in Oregon, USA is a wild green food which has long been valued for its broad range of bioavailable nutrients and other molecules. Along with general health benefits, this microalgae has been associated with its positive effects upon mental energy, attention, mood and which until now have been largely anecdotal. As a Nutritionist who has used Klamath blue green algae herself and on patients for a number of years, I have explored the research on the many health benefits of this green food. I would like to draw other practitioners' attention to the clinical data that now exists on Klamath blue green algae's unique components which suggests it may be one of nature's most potent brain and mood foods.
So why do we eat it? Well, the indigenous people of Japan and China have eaten it for thousands of years for its nutritional properties. Blue-green algae is a great source of plant-based dietary protein (one particular type, Spirulina is made up of 60% protein!), plenty of B-vitamins, essential fatty acids, and iron. It is also a powerhouse supplier of chlorophyll, a natural phytochemical that gives plants its green pigment, and has demonstrated the ability to reduce the damage from carcinogenic substances, and to have antioxidant effect in the body. Spirulina is a simple one-celled microscopic blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria). There are two species, Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima. The Arthrospira platensis and Arthrospira maxima species were once classified in the genus Spirulina. There is now agreement that they are in fact Arthrospira; nevertheless, and somewhat confusingly, the older term Spirulina remains in use for historical reasons. Arthrospira is cultivated worldwide; used as a dietary supplement as well as a whole food; and is also available in tablet, flake and powder form. Under a microscope, spirulina appears as long, thin, blue-green spiral threads. The odor and taste of spirulina is similar to seaweed. Spirulina is a blue-green algae that has been linked to improving health, fertility, pregnancy, energy and wellbeing. However it is a cool, damp food so not to be eaten all year round – read more below.Better blue-green algaes include “Klamath Blue Green Algae” and “Marine Phyotplankton.” They are far superior in nutritional content than spirulina and don’t have the sharp energy spike of Spirulina either. They also have electrolytes, magnesium and B vitamins so you won’t need vitamin and mineral supplements when taking these. Blue-Green Algae is one of nature’s most cleansing, nourishing, and regenerative food sources. The unique and pristine growing environment of our certified organic Blue-Green Algae ensures a purity and mineral content that other nutritional algae lack. Our Blue-Green Algae is organic and kosher, contains absolutely no fillers, binders, additives, or preservatives and is unconditionally guaranteed.
